Wheel bearings are small parts that carry the entire weight of your trailer and everything on it. When the grease inside them breaks down or gets contaminated, friction builds quickly, and a neglected bearing can go from a faint hum to a locked hub surprisingly fast. In Phoenix, pavement temperatures in summer add heat to an assembly that already runs warm, which thins grease and speeds up wear. Phoenix Titans, LLC repacks and repairs trailer bearings at our shop and through mobile service, so a routine maintenance job does not turn into a roadside problem.
Repacking vs. Replacement
A repack means removing the hub, cleaning out the old grease, inspecting each roller and race, and packing the bearings with fresh grease before reassembly with a new grease seal. When the rollers and races are smooth and free of pitting, discoloration, or scoring, a repack is often all that is needed. If we find blue heat marks, flaking, rust, or rough spots, the bearing and its matching race should be replaced together, since pairing a new bearing with a worn race shortens its life.
While the hub is off, we check the spindle for scoring, wear, or heat damage and look at the hub itself for cracks or worn bearing bores. If the spindle or axle beam is damaged, our trailer axle repair service covers the next step. Hubs with Bearing Buddies or EZ-Lube spindles make greasing easier, but they still benefit from periodic teardown, because adding grease through a fitting cannot reveal a pitted race or push out water that has already settled inside.
Boat Trailers and Water Intrusion
Boat trailers that launch at Lake Pleasant, Saguaro Lake, or the Colorado River face a special challenge. Hot hubs that are backed into cool water contract and can draw water past the seals. Combined with the dust that monsoon storms push into every crevice, that moisture turns grease into a gritty paste that eats bearings from the inside. We recommend more frequent inspection for any trailer that is regularly submerged.
Our bearing services include:
- Bearing Repack: Full cleaning, inspection, and fresh grease for inner and outer bearings on each hub.
- Bearing and Race Replacement: Pressing out worn races and installing new matched bearing sets.
- Grease Seal Replacement: Fitting new seals to keep grease in and water and dust out.
- Hub and Spindle Inspection: Checking bores, spindle surfaces, nuts, and retainers for wear or damage.
- EZ-Lube and Bearing Buddy Service: Servicing quick-lube spindles and bearing protectors so they work as intended.
- Hub Assembly Replacement: Installing complete new hubs when the original is cracked or worn beyond use.
Warning Signs of a Failing Bearing
After a drive, carefully check each hub by holding your hand near it. One hub that feels noticeably hotter than the others is a red flag. Grinding, rumbling, or squealing from a wheel, a tire that wobbles when you rock it from top to bottom, grease slung onto the inside of the wheel, or uneven tire wear can all point to bearing trouble. Long highway runs and climbs up the I-17 grades toward Flagstaff put sustained load on bearings, so these signs deserve attention before your next trip.
